Auto Cost Negotiating 101

by Guest Author on August 28, 2010

If you are looking to buy a new car, I have a few tips for you here that should make the process a lot easier.

Negotiations are a lot easier when you know how to handle the dealer who is confident that he can sell ice to Eskimos. Be very blase and indifferent. Tell him that there are other cars you have also looked at, and the best price gets your cash. Act very uninterested while he goes through his spiel and even when he offers you a good price, tell him that you’re sure he could do better.

Sales people are very clever. They will talk about anything at all except the car; this comes in right at the end when they have gained your trust. Don’t let them go down this road, knock them out of their comfort zone by making it perfectly clear you are there to do business and nothing else.

It’s easy for these sales people to make you think that they are your friends and will do anything they can for you. This is their job, and your money pays their wages, simple as that. Have your budget fixed when you walk onto the lot, and don’t let yourself be talked into any extras that you simply don’t need.

Be prepared and do your research before you enter the lot. If you have seen an ad for a similar model, take it with you. Try and find out the Kelly blue book value and make a note of that too.

Another good idea is to find out what others have paid or cars at that lot and what terms they were given. This gives you a great bargaining point when it comes down to the nitty gritty of thrashing out the final deal.

The salesman relies on customers buying cars from them to pay their bills and feed their families, it doesn’t hurt to remind them of this fact of they overstep the mark and start getting pushy.

Knowing exactly what you want before you enter the lot will make the sales man uneasy. He will still try and undermine your confidence and talk you into something that you don’t want. If the dynamics shifty and you start to feel undermined, walk out straight away.
